Cleaning Equipment: Under Pressure

IPCS, Seven Hills NSW

High pressure water blasters come with a wide range of pressure and flow combinations. Experts warn, however, that the wrong choice of equipment or technique can have a detrimental effect on the surface material, in other words, “the cure can be worse than the disease.”

For almost every job in pressure cleaning, there’s a right way and a wrong way to get the task done.  IPCS’s Hamish Lorenz warns users to take into account the need to analyse the job before selecting the equipment.

“High pressure water has the potential to clean an object, but also has the capacity to cause incredible damage” he said.  “For example, using a 4,000 or 5,000 p.s.i. Aussie hydroblaster may get a job done incredibly fast, but could do immeasurable damage to a monument or public building” he said.

The amount of water used in the job is also becoming more critical as water shortages kick in, and governments become even stricter about environmental pollution.

“Monument cleaning is a classic example” said Lorenz, “for example, cleaning the steps of the Opera House is an ideal job for an Aussie Hydro-Loop trailer mount.  The trailer mounted machine offers the benefits of a portable engine drive steam cleaner, but can deliver pressures of up to 4,000 p.s.i., and temperatures as high as 130 degrees.”

IPCS claims that that combination of temperature, pressure and flow is able to achieve virtually any cleaning task, including the removal of graffiti, chewing gum and oil or grease stains.

The Aussie Hydro-Loop uses a unique “clean and capture” system that enables it to re-cycle it’s own cleaning water. That clever feature means it can operate away from mains water and also comply with EPA regulations that forbid letting used, contaminated water run into storm water drains.
